Murray, it is important to identify why your slides are "bland." The first suspect should be your content. Focus on getting the right data, the right words, the right illustrations and charts. Good content should be exciting in its own right:

- "Profits are up." (Hooray!)
- "Here is my plan to save the company." (Hooray!)
- "Here is an org chart." (Snore!)

When your content is great, then go ahead and spend some time on your background design.

Chris, the pie chart function in PowerPoint is fairly adequate for creating customized / editable pie charts.

However, I would encourage you not to use pie charts at all. They are only able to show percentages (out of the whole pie) and not raw numbers. More importantly, it is visually difficult to draw clear comparisons between two values on a pie chart. For example, the difference between 25% and 30% is almost invisible.

Instead, use bar charts and real values.

Check out this post on the subject: http://mike-pulsifer.org/2008/12/improve-your-slides-charts/

Thanks for this excellent post.

My boss has recently wanted me to create a power point presentation, but I haven't done this since school, and even then I mostly used it for animation haha.

There's a lot of great information here. I remember watching Shift Happens in one of my college classes. The PPT templates are very helpful as well. My current presentation was looking very bland.
