The Midweek Manifesto

You’ve just passed the middle of the week.  No time like the present to take a look at what you’ve done and what you have to get done.  Here’s a short note I like to call The Midweek Manifesto:

My mission is to reflect on the beginning of the week, see what I’ve not done and reboot it and see what I’ve done and celebrate it.  Looking forward I will take what’s left to be done and do it and with the rest of my plans I will stand firm.  I’ll add tasks as I need and make sure that I heed my own voice that tells me, “I must get to complete.”

Breaking Bad Habits

Habits aren’t always bad, but the word just seems to conjure up thoughts of things that aren’t particularly good for us.  There are “challenges” all over the web that try to help you break these habits but there are also those that try to instill good ones.  These challenges can come with weekly or monthly timelines (such as 30 Days of Creativity or the Jerry Seinfeld-inspired Don’t Break The Chain), and even make you accountable to not just yourself but others as well (The Power of Less Challenge would be an example of this).

Achieving: The Over/Under

It is the lengths to which one goes to achieve that makes them extraordinary or just plain ordinary.  Or perhaps less.

Effort is what propels achievement – and it’s often not the person with the most talent that stands out but the one who worked the hardest.  Prominent leadership expert/speaker/author John Maxwell has touched on this in many of his books, most prominently in Talent Is Never Enough.

How Far Ahead Do You Plan?

Its been made pretty clear that an integral part of being awesome at being productive is doing some planning. When, where and what method you use are questions only you can figure out through trial and error.

Once youve stopped trying and (hopefully) erring, you can dig a little deeper and look further into the future. Thats when the real meat of goal-setting comes into play. Thats when life gets interesting…and more fulfilling.

How far ahead do you plan? How many weeks, months, years? Do you plan activities, events and goals? How far down the rabbit hole do you go?

The Rock Solid Reflection Plan

One of the best ways – some would say the only way – to keep tabs on where you’re at and where you’re headed in terms of being productive is by looking back on where you’ve been.  It’s challenging to do this regularly.  Really challenging.  What’s more is that many people don’t do it at all.  Doing this (or, rather, not doing this) is a recipe of mediocrity…or even organizational disaster.

In Conversation With: Sean Aiken of One-Week Job

While we’re all striving to have an awesome time working at one job, I scored an interview with a gentleman you managed to do so with 52 of them over the span of one year!

Introducing Sean Aiken, founder and “do-er” of The One-Week Job Project.  I met Sean last year at a local TEDx event and after hearing about his project, I knew I had to keep up with his adventures.  He’s been featured on several major news outlets (New York Times, CBC, CNN, 20/20, among others) and has authored a book on the subject and documented his story on film as well.  During my conversation with Sean, he discusses the reasons he embarked upon this year long journey and what his results were.  I can tell you that his book about it, entitled (appropriately) The One-Week Job Project is available now at fine bookstores – both online and not-so-online.  He’s also completed his film and was showcasing it at a private premiere this week.  Hopefully it’ll come to a theatre or television near you in the not-too-distant future.
